Intermec cites flexibility, ease of use for SAPConsole transactions as key to reducing labor and achieving more efficient process and material flow
Milwaukee, WI, July 12, 2004 — Catalyst International, Inc. (OTC: CLYS.OB), a global supplier of supply chain execution (SCE) solutions, recently implemented SAP WM and SAPConsole for Intermec Technologies Corp., a UNOVA Inc. (NYSE:UNA) company and a global leader in wired and wireless automatic data collection. The comprehensive solution, which also included Catalyst’s library of native R/3 data collection transaction templates as well as Intermec’s EasyCoder® PL4 portable printer, increased warehouse productivity, reduced labor and improved customer service in just a few short months after “go live”.
“Through tighter integration with the SAP system and greatly enhanced data collection, we’re able to do 1,200 picks per shift, a 25 percent productivity improvement,” said Bob Rainer, Intermec vice president of operations. “These are extraordinary gains that we did not expect to achieve so quickly.”
“This was a great team effort between Intermec and Catalyst during each phase of the implementation, from executive sponsorship to IT and operations project management,” said Michael Godshall, Catalyst executive vice president, product management. “We’re proud that Intermec will be using this facility as a showcase site and model for its other distribution centers.”

Additional Project Information, Customer Benefits
Intermec implemented SAP WM and SAPConsole to integrate warehouse management with its enterprise business process structure. In addition to building a strong foundation for customer value and globalization, this integrated system enabled the company to synchronize its inventory process, manage a single inventory, expedite orders and achieve other efficiencies.
Catalyst utilized its extensive library of SAP data collection transaction templates to accomplish these goals on a tight schedule. It also developed custom transactions for business processes to further optimize materials routing throughout the warehouse and shop floor.
“The SAPConsole transactions were a highlight of the implementation,” said Ruth Landes, Intermec’s IT project manager. “Although we were already using RF equipment, we increased the RF transaction footprint within the warehouse and significantly improved the efficiency of our mobile data entry transactions.
“Catalyst was the ideal partner for this implementation because of its knowledge and experience in supply chain management, warehouse logistics and SAP beyond simple ‘vanilla’ applications. Their consultants were disciplined project managers who understood our business goals and met the deadlines.”
Intermec’s 50,000 square-foot warehouse in Everett, Wash.(with another 15,000 square feet of external warehouse space) serves as both a distribution center and feeder to the company’s demandflow product assembly lines. Its new data collection infrastructure includes Intermec’s EasyCoder® PL4 portable printer, the first to integrate many of the features available in a desktop printer into a portable design. This enabled labels to be printed at assembly stations, thus eliminating hand keying and reducing the number of scans required during the order fulfillment process.
Another key benefit that Intermec immediately realized was full visibility into the sales order process throughout its business. From sales order entry and delivery scheduling to final assembly at the packing station, real-time information is readily available to many departments, including the customer service team. As a result, Intermec has improved its customer responsiveness and the number of same-day shipments, plus has more flexibility in meeting customers’ day-to-day needs.
